  • Selection of suitable and certified compensation projects

Progress

  • Summer 2023: Life cycle assessments for selected collections provide initial data basis for CO₂ footprint at product level

Updates

May 2024 - Kick-off with Carbonfact

After laying the foundation for our life cycle assessments at product level last year with Made2Flow, we are expanding the analyses to other product groups over the course of the year. The aim is to provide water and CO2 footprint data for all our products by 2025. In Carbonfact, we have found a partner with whom we want to tackle this extensive project and calculate our corporate footprint from July onwards and hope to work with them in the long term. The data obtained will also provide the basis for evaluating whether we can actively reduce CO2 emissions along our supply chain. For the remaining emissions, we will identify suitable offsetting projects that are in line with our impact strategy

100% Groundwater neutral Work in progress

Water is not only the basis of all life but also an integral part of MYMARINI's DNA. That's why, since 2021, we have been working to offset the amount of fresh water used to manufacture our products and the water consumption of our company sites in Hamburg and Triberg with the support of the Climate Sponsorship and the Planting Drinking Water initiative.

Goal by 2025

  • 100% of all collections are certified as groundwater-neutral through climate sponsorship
  • All company sites are certified as groundwater neutral

Milestones

2020

  • the first 165 trees are planted in Klövensteen Forest in our name and contribute to the generation of 33,000 liters of additional groundwater
  • Our company sites are certified as groundwater neutral

2021

  • The "MYMARINI Forest" initiative is launched with the aim of planting 30,000 more trees by the end of 2023
  • Another 12,000 trees are planted in our name
  • 90% of our products and our company sites are certified as groundwater neutral

2022

  • For the first time, we as a team can plant our own trees in the MYMARINI forest area
  • A total of 10,000 more trees will be planted in our name this year
  • 96% of our products and our company sites are certified as groundwater neutral

2023

  • Research and collection for water footprints of all remaining collections begins
  • November: the last 8,000 trees are planted in the Klövensteen forest with the help of the MYMARINI team
  • 30,165 trees are planted in the MYMARINI forest, generating 6,033,000 liters of additional groundwater per year

Necessary measures

  • Determine data on the fresh water consumption of the other collections
  • Analysis of water-saving measures for the company's own sites and along the supply chain
  • Initiate and/or support further measures to offset drinking water consumption in the long term in order to compensate for increasing water consumption

B Corp Certification Work in progress

B Corp stands for "Benefit Corporation" and is a certification for companies that want to demonstrate their social and environmental performance. This certification confirms that a company fulfils strict standards in the areas of environmental performance, social responsibility, transparency and accountability.

Introduction

MYMARINI already decided to start the B Corp certification process in 2021. However, this process was postponed for the time being due to its complexity and the time required, as the necessary capacities were not available. In 2023, a small working group intensified its work on the certification process, which ultimately led to the submission of the application in November 2023.

Amendments to the articles of association for B Corp

As part of the application process, MYMARINI's articles of association had to be amended to fulfil certain requirements for B Corp certification. One change that had to be included in the articles of association, for example, was the obligation to take into account the interests of other stakeholders in addition to financial interests, particularly employees, the community and the environment.

Evaluation phase and current status

MYMARINI has been in the evaluation phase of the B Corp certification process since March. In this phase, basic information is checked to determine whether the company fulfils the requirements for certification. The information from the previously completed questionnaires is also reviewed. During this phase, certain tasks must be completed by MYMARINI while waiting for the review by the assigned analysts.

Outlook

MYMARINI is aiming to be officially certified as a B Corp by the end of 2024. This certification would not only be a recognition of the company's commitment to social and environmental responsibility, but also a demonstration of striving for a higher standard of corporate governance and sustainability.

Conclusion

Although the process of B Corp certification is lengthy and challenging, MYMARINI is determined to take the necessary steps to obtain certification. These efforts demonstrate the company's commitment to social responsibility and sustainability and emphasise its position as a pioneer in ethical business management in the fashion industry.

Updates

May 2024 - Techtextil 2024 trade fair in Frankfurt

At this year's Techtextil trade fair, we came one step closer to our goal of developing recyclable swimwear designs. We were able to connect with an elastane manufacturer who has developed an elastic fibre on a chemical basis that differs from the most commonly used elastane (polyurethane). This innovative fibre not only offers better chlorine resistance and therefore longevity of the material, but also a scalable way to be removed from blended fabrics. The process is not yet in industrial use. However, the research results show that it is possible to remove the elastic fibre from blended fabrics with polyamide (PA) and polyester (PE) and thus return the polymers (PA and PE) to the cycle. In the next step, we will test fabrics that use regenerated nylon yarns and this elastic fibre. We also need to clarify with the manufacturer what the recycling process for these fabrics could look like in the future and what the timeline for implementation is.

Transparency is very important to us at MYMARINI. From materials to production and resource consumption, we focus on our ecological and social responsibility. We believe that you have a right to know about the environmental impact of the clothes you buy. That's why we want to calculate the ecological footprint of all our products. In doing so, we focus on recording the CO₂-equivalent emissions and water consumption of our products. This enables us to show the impact on the environment and the resources used.

Goal by 2025

  • Determination and transparent presentation of the CO₂ and water footprint for all our products
  • CO₂ emissions for 80% of all products are offset through selected projects

Milestones

  • Summer 2023: in cooperation with Made2Flow, determination and transparent presentation of the CO₂ and water footprint for our Classics, Swim Apparel and Underwear collection

Updates

August 2024 - Awaiting first results

In July 2024, we embarked on an exciting journey with Carbonfact to obtain carbon footprint data for all our products and evaluate our company’s CO₂-equivalent emissions. After submitting our initial historical data on purchase orders and product catalogs, we are now eagerly awaiting the first results. These preliminary results will utilize many generic data points and will be refined over time. The more precise data we input, the more accurate the output will be. By measuring our emissions across our value chain, we can identify potential hotspots and establish a baseline for our compensation efforts.

May 2024 - Kick-Off with Carbonfact

After laying the foundation for our life cycle assessments at product level last year with Made2Flow, we are expanding the analyses to other product groups over the course of the year. Drinking water subscription Perpetual

In 2020, in response to the heat crises of recent summers, we donated bottled drinking water for the first time to Hamburg-based organizations like Hinz & Kunzt and GoBanyo. In summer 2021, we decided to extend this concept beyond the summer to the rest of the year. Drinking water is a daily need for all people, but unfortunately there is little to no access to safe drinking water sources for people without a permanent residence. That is why the drinking water subscription for GoBanyo was launched in July 2021. The concept: every month, MYMARINI donates 30 crates of 0.5 liter drinking water bottles from Viva con Agua to GoBanyo. These are distributed to the guests of the shower bus and provide easy and dignified access to drinking water.

Goal by 2025

Scale up drinking water subscriptions in Croatia and Italy

Goal by 2030

Scaling the drinking water subscription to all Tier 1 and Tier 2 locations

Necessary measures

  • Identify suitable organizations for drinking water subscriptions at our production sites in Croatia and Italy
  • Expansion of the existing drinking water subscription model to Tier 1
  • Expansion of the existing drinking water subscription model to Tier 2

Milestones

  • GoBanyo drinking water subscription, Hamburg
  • 2021: 4,200 bottles (0.5 l) of drinking water donated to GoBanyo
  • 2022: 6,600 bottles (0.5 l) of drinking water donated to GoBanyo
  • 2023: 2,400 bottles (0.5 l) of drinking water donated to GoBanyo
  • June 2023: Drinking water subscription paused due to generally difficult economic situation

Updates

May 2024 - New edition of the drinking water subscription

Thanks to optimised financial planning for 2024, in which 1% of the planned turnover is firmly earmarked for socio-ecological measures, we were able to relaunch our drinking water subscription for the Hamburg organisation in January.

From now on, GoBanyo can order drinks on its own responsibility within an agreed framework as required and thus make them available to its guests. In order to avoid having to spontaneously cut support again, the agreements are now always valid for the coming quarter.

Responsible & transparent supply chains Perpetual

In the textile industry, it is often difficult to trace the entire supply chain, as standards vary globally and important information is rarely accessible to consumers. We see it as our duty to enter into an open and honest dialog with all our stakeholders, because we are convinced that transparency and honesty are the foundation for sustainable action. This means that we carefully select and regularly review our suppliers and producers. In future, our aim is to communicate the information we collect and our procedures even more transparently and at the same time to implement measures that ensure our high socio-ecological standards in the long term.

Goal by 2025

  • Disclosure of all our partner companies along the supply chain
  • Presentation of supply chain transparency at product level (online)

Necessary measures

Productions and suppliers

  • Establish annual production visits
  • Conclusion of production contracts with all production facilities (and agreement of MYMYARINI Code of Conduct)
  • Regularly request information on materials, labor standards, occupational safety and certificates, etc.
  • Transparent presentation of our supply chains at product level online

Progress

  • 2022, March: Production visit to Croatia
  • 2022, April: Production visit to Poland
  • 2023, Januar: Conclusion of production contract with Nestor in Croatia
  • 2023, March: Regular questionnaire on socio-ecological issues to all existing and new partner companies in the supply chain
  • 2023, May: Visit to the Carvico/Jersey Lomellina production facility in northern Italy

Updates

2024, August / New production facility confirmed in Portugal

For the upcoming 2025 season, we will be producing a part of our collection for the first time with the production facility Subtiltendencia Unipessoal, Lda. in Portugal. The production facility is OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified. We are very excited about this collaboration and had the opportunity to verify the standards on-site and clarify any open questions during the test phase. In our upcoming sustainability report 2023/2024, as well as on our website, we will provide more detailed information about this production facility at the start of the 2025 season.

2024, May / Visit to a potential new production site in Portugal

We had been looking for a second production facility for our swimwear collections for some time. On the one hand, to minimise our risk in the event that our main production facility is (temporarily) unavailable for unforeseeable reasons) and, on the other, to relieve the pressure on it during peak production periods. After extensive research and various tests, we visited our favoured production facility in the north of Portugal in March and were able to get an impression of the working conditions and discuss details of production. We are very satisfied with the work and the conditions and are currently in discussions about a future collaboration.

2024, January / Transparent presentation of our supply chain online

Since January, all stakeholders have been able to transparently track the supply chain for the majority of our products at product level. This applies to all swimwear and all designs that are made from the same material as our swimwear. For 2025, we want to extend this supply chain transparency to the entire product range.

MYMARINI Park Vision

The MYMARINI Park is in the broadest sense the continuation of the vision of a MYMARINI pool. Not everyone's favorite activities are playing and swimming. And we are aware that Hamburg does not invite you to splash around at all times of the year. And so we came up with the idea of promoting a place that offers and teaches other activities and skills. Like the pool, this place should be a meeting place for everyone. In addition to free swimming lessons for children, a bike parkour and a pump track offer the opportunity to teach children how to ride a bike. Not only do we want to enable children to learn to swim, but we also believe that "every child should have the opportunity to learn to ride a bike" (Mareen Albright). In the park, bicycles and protective clothing would be provided for the very youngest children and parents can practice safe cycling with their children together with volunteers.

MYMARINI Pool Vision

"Every child should be able to swim." - Mareen Albright, founder and designer of MYMARINI

Since Mareen founded MYMARINI in 2013, she has been able to turn many of her visions into reality. That's why we firmly believe that the MYMARINI pool doesn't have to remain a vision in the future.

The idea is to create a place that is close to the city and well connected. A place where people of all ages, backgrounds and social status can meet and children can learn to swim under supervision and free of charge. It's about community and encouraging children and showing them early on that they can do anything.

4-Days-Week Pilot project Done

MYMARINI not only wants to be a pioneer for innovative and sustainable fashion design, but also for sustainable corporate management. With this in mind, the "4-day week" pilot project was launched for all company employees in January 2024.

This means that every employee generally has Fridays off and the total weekly working hours have been reduced from 37.5 to 32 hours, with full pay compensation. The pilot project is scheduled to run for six months, with the condition that it can be stopped at any time if it appears that the new working model is having a negative impact on the team's stress levels or sales development.

During the preparatory phase, the necessary measures were discussed in order to facilitate implementation for everyone:

  • Optimisation of the meeting culture
  • Introduction of fixed team focus times two days a week
  • Customised solutions for the store and logistics team, which place the additional days off on different days of the week in order to ensure operations on all working days and reduce stress levels on subsequent days
  • Scheduling for regular meetings of a 4-day working group
  • Automation of certain processes
  • Clarification of responsibilities within the team

Updates

Interim results after three months

We are pleasantly surprised and very satisfied with how smoothly the project has got off the ground. In general, the feedback from the team is very positive. Nevertheless, it is clear that it is easier for some areas to implement the project without working on Fridays, while others find it "stressful" not to answer messages on this day. In principle, however, the team agrees that working hours can be divided up in such a way that the free "Friday" is used if this makes sense for work processes and counteracts stress. However, there should not be an increase in overtime.

The teams have organised themselves very well in order to implement this concept successfully. It also does not appear that the pilot project is having a negative impact on sales development.

A questionnaire was developed at the halfway point to provide further anonymous insights into the team's assessment of the 4-day week. The pilot project is scheduled to end at the end of June 2024. It will then be decided whether the pilot will become an established company concept.

Big Update

After a four-month pilot phase, we assessed the team’s sentiment towards the 4-day workweek through a survey. The survey included questions about the experience so far, the workload, and the long-term feasibility of the 4-day workweek. It also asked what adjustments would be necessary to successfully implement this model. The results clearly showed that the team wants to continue the 4-day workweek and identified the additional measures required for its successful implementation. Today, on June 13, 2024, we informed the entire team that the 4-day workweek will become a permanent part of MYMARINI and will be included in our employment contracts.

What does the 4-day workweek look like at MYMARINI?

  • The weekly working hours have been reduced from 37.5 to 32 hours, with full pay.
  • All office team members work 8 hours a day from Monday to Thursday and have Friday to Sunday off.
  • Our teams in Service and Shipping (Triberg) have the additional day off on different days within their teams. This ensures that we continue to meet our high standards of service quality and manage the workload effectively, especially on Mondays after a three-day break.
  • Two days a week have designated focus times (4 hours) during which work can be done without interruptions. These focus times can also be used for meetings by mutual agreement.

Why MYMARINI is implementing the 4-day workweek!

The 4-day workweek offers numerous benefits for companies and employees:

  1. More Leisure Time: With an additional day off each week, employees have more time for family, hobbies, and relaxation, leading to a better work-life balance.
  2. Increased Productivity: Studies have shown that productivity rises with a 4-day workweek. Employees are more motivated and work more efficiently.
  3. Reduced Sick Leave: Additional rest time reduces the number of sick days. Employees are healthier and more resilient.
  4. Employer Attractiveness: Companies offering a 4-day workweek are more attractive to skilled workers, making recruitment and retention easier.

Studies, such as those from the University of Reading, show that companies with a 4-day workweek can achieve up to a 20% increase in productivity. Research by Perpetual Guardian in New Zealand found that employees were happier, less stressed, and just as productive as before.

We are proud to announce that we have successfully tested and implemented the 4-day workweek as a forward-thinking work model at MYMARINI. We hope to serve as a model for other companies and welcome any opportunity to share our experiences and learn from others.

Girls Surf Camp 2022 Done

Creating positive change — in people’s lives, for the future of our planet, and empowering girls and women of all ages. This is our mission. That's why we are delighted about our partnership with the Hamburg-based association THE SOCIAL SURF CLUB e.V. Founded in 2013 by Kim Bartel, the association organizes free surf camps in Denmark for children in difficult circumstances. When we heard about her work, we immediately knew that we wanted to be a part of this great work. So we did the math, reached out and decided to support and fund a surf camp for girls aged 12 to 16 in July 2022.

Updates

Continuation of the Girls Surf Camp

The first Girls Surf Camp, which Mymarini developed and evaluated in collaboration with the Social Surf Club e.V., took place in 2022. Mymarini is increasingly committed to promoting girls and women, which is how the idea of the surf camp came about. The idea was not to exclude male participants, but to deliberately give people who identify as female a particularly protected space and the opportunity for new perspectives. The first camp was a complete success and this year the 3rd Girls Surf Camp is already taking place in Denmark. The topics that are dealt with on site arise spontaneously within the group. Not only the participating kids go home with new perspectives and learnings about themselves, but also the counsellors.

Mymarini continues to support the association with monetary donations for the Girls Surf Camp as well as a selection of swimwear for the girls and carers.

MYMARINI Forest Done

In collaboration with Klimapatenschaft GmbH, we are supporting the local forest restoration project in Hamburg's Klövensteen forest - a big step towards our long-term goal of becoming 100% groundwater-neutral. In 2021, we have set ourselves the goal of planting a total of 30,000 trees in Klövensteen in our name by the end of 2023.

The MYMARINI forest near Hamburg will generate six million liters of additional groundwater per year from 2023.

Milestones

2020

  • the first 165 trees are planted in Klövensteen Forest in our name and contribute to the generation of 33,000 liters of additional groundwater

2021

  • The "MYMARINI Forest" initiative is launched with the aim of planting 30,000 more trees by the end of 2023
  • in fall, another 12,000 trees are planted in our name

2022

  • For the first time, we as a team can plant our own trees in the MYMARINI forest area
  • A total of 10,000 more trees will be planted in our name this year

2023

  • November: the last 8,000 trees are planted in the Klövensteen forest with the help of the MYMARINI team
  • 30,165 trees are planted in the MYMARINI forest, generating 6,033,000 liters of additional groundwater per year

Updates

2023, May: Mymarini Forest receives information sign

The "Mymarini Forest - 30,000 trees" project phase was completed in November 2023. Since April 2024, a sign has also provided information about the measures in Klövensteen Forest and why Mymarini has decided to become the largest planting partner of the climate sponsorship and Trinkwasserpflanzen e.V. to date. We want to use the sign to inform, encourage and motivate people to become part of the project themselves. It doesn't have to be 30,000 trees, but every single tree contributes to an increased groundwater production and thus to the basis of all life. If you live in Hamburg or are visiting, we highly recommend that you take a walk around the Klövensteen Forest and watch our "little trees" grow.

Pilotproject Take Back Done

We take back all MYMARINI garments that you no longer wear, from any collection and regardless of where you bought them. We want to ensure that our products are recycled sustainably and responsibly. With the MYMARINI Take Back pilot project, you take responsibility for your MYMARINIs together with us and help us to ensure the best possible recycling.

Goal by 2025

  • Evaluate submissions and develop suitable recycling strategies
  • Find suitable recycling partners

Goal by 2030

  • 2nd-use business model established
  • Cooperation with recyclers for submissions that are not suitable for 2nd use

Necessary measures

  • Development of a take-back system for all MYMARINIs
  • Evaluation of submissions
  • Development of measures for further recycling

Progress

  • 2022: Customer survey as basis for business model
  • 2023: Expanded storage area in Triberg
  • 2023, April: Launch take-back scheme for all MYMARINI designs
  • 2023, July: A total of 63 discarded MYMARINIs were sent in
  • 2023, October: A total of 132 discarded MYMARINIs were sent in

The challenges

  • Further utilization still unclear
  • Optimize collection process and minimize individual submissions

Updates

Quarterly update No.3

Since the last update in October 2023, 20 more MYMARINIs have been submitted via the Take Back program.

A total of 152 parts have already been collected. In Q1 2024, we will deepen our planning for possible further utilization of the submitted MYMARINIs

Quarterly update No.4

Since the last update in January 2024, 41 more MYMARINIs have been submitted via the Take Back program.

In total, 199 parts have already been collected in the first year. We never expected to receive so many products and are delighted that our customers are joining us in taking responsibility for the responsable treatment of our products. An initial analysis shows that around 50% of the parts have been worn out, around 40% that the designs no longer fit them or they are not convinced by the color or cut, 3% due to qualitative defects or chlorine damage and the rest have not provided any clear information about the return.

Due to its success, Take Back will become a permanent part of Mymarini.

The next steps involve:

  • Automating the processes in the background
  • Integration of the possibility for customers worldwide to participate in the Take Back program
  • Sorting products into 2 categories: 1. possible resale and 2. recycling
  • Discussions with experts for responsible textile recycling processes

We will keep you regularly updated on the project via this platform. The next major update will be in a year's time.

Aligning with the SDGs

To align our corporate actions with our mission, we have aligned our sustainability strategy with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our commitmentis increasingly focused on the following four SDGs, which are also reflected in our values and corporate culture.

SDG 6: Clean water & sanitation

SDG 6: Clean water & sanitation

Water as a resource is particularly close to our hearts — it is practically part of our corporate DNA. And at the same time, we are aware that the fashion industry consumes enormous amounts of fresh water — and often in places where the supply of clean water is already scarce.

In addition, poor water quality and lack of sanitation affect the livelihood and educational opportunities ofpoor families worldwide. By 2050, one in four people is expected to live in a country that is at least temporarily affected by drinking water scarcity. SDG 6 aims to ensure that all people have access to clean water and adequate sanitation to promote sustainable and equitable development.

SDG 8: Decent work & economic growth

SDG 8: Decent work & economic growth

The well-being of our employees and partners along the entire supply chain is our most important asset. Only when we are balanced, happy and healthy can we make a positive difference.

SDG 8 aims to create sustainable and inclusive economic growth and decent jobs for all. Specifically, this means boosting the economy without harming the environment, creating quality jobs, and giving everyone the opportunity to participate in progress.

SDG 5: Gender equality

SDG 5: Gender equality

Gender equality — Gender identity should not determine who or what a person can become! MYMARINI was founded by a single woman, and also in 2022 the MYMARINI team consists of 82.8 % women. With courage and the right companions, many doors can be opened.

Unfortunately, both globally and nationally, opportunities for people who identify as female are still (severely) limited. They are often given less responsibility, and their categorization into gendered roles shapes their childhood and adolescence. The goal of SDG 5 is for women to be able to participate in public, political and economic life in a self-determined and equal manner. To achieve this goal, discrimination and violence against women must come to an end and equal access to education and to communication and information technologies must be made possible.

SDG 12: Responsible consumption & production

SDG 12: Responsible consumption & production

Along our value chain, we ensure the responsible use of resources and fair working conditions. We know our supply chains and want to share our knowledge with all stakeholders transparently.

SDG 12 aims to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns worldwide. A better future for all is to be created through more efficient use of resources. The aim is to achieve energy savings, reduce waste and use more environmentally friendly technologies. It aims to meet the basic needs of all people by providing access to clean water, food and education, while ensuring decent working conditions and a healthy environment. In addition, society’s knowledge of sustainable consumption and production patterns should be improved by raising awareness in order to shape a better world together.
