A tour of the Maldives' best beaches
Welcome to the Maldives: With its breathtaking atolls, crystal-clear waters, and soft white-sand beaches, this island nation is the epitome of natural beauty and tranquility. MYMARINI Community member Sina recently had the privilege of hosting two dive expeditions while visiting these magical islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean for the first time. Read on to discover why the Maldives is an excellent destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and adventure.
Dive expeditions on Fuvahmulah and Dharavandhoo: a love affair with the Maldives
There are some places where you instantly feel at home without even knowing why. That's what Sina experienced while visiting the Maldives for the first time. From the moment you arrive, you too will be spellbound by the special energy and spectacular views of the islands of Fuvahmulah and Dharavandhoo. Sina is excited to share her favorite beaches on these islands with the MYMARINI Community and tell us all about the profound impact they had on her.
Fuvahmulah: The jewel of the Maldives
Nestled in the southernmost part of the Maldives, the island of Fuvahmulah stands alone, not part of any atoll. Its remote beauty has earned it the title of "the most beautiful island of the Maldives." The island is encircled by the deep blue water, teeming with big pelagic fish, and its raw, untouched charm is truly captivating. On a deep dive, be aware that you might encounter tiger sharks.
Thoodu Beach: A shifting paradise
Thoodu Beach, also known as Pebbles Beach, is a favorite spot on Fuvahmulah. This beach is unique, with sand that shifts between the island’s sides, making every visit a potentially new experience. The sand is a blend of unique pearl-like grains and pebbles, giving it a texture and color unlike any other.
Watching the sun set over the dive spots you've explored in the morning, with the clear turquoise water and perfectly breaking waves, is an experience that etches itself into your soul. The wild, raw beauty of this place, framed by palm trees and the daily rhythm of local fishermen bringing in their catch, will make you want to never leave.
Southwest Beaches: Untamed beauty
The beaches on the southwest side of Fuvahmulah don’t have names, which only adds to their sense of untouched wilderness. This side of the island is where you'll find the best surf spots. The powerful waves crashing against the shore, the pristine natural landscape, and the solitude make these beaches a haven for anyone looking to connect deeply with nature. Walking along these shores, feeling the ocean spray on your skin and the sun warming your face, you'll feel an overwhelming sense of peace and belonging. It’s a place where time seems to stand still, letting you fully soak in the moment and appreciate the raw beauty of the sea, marine life, and beautiful beaches all around you.
Dharavandhoo: The gateway to manta magic
Dharavandhoo is a small island you can circle on a bike in about ten minutes. It is located in the Baa Atoll of the Maldives, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for its rich marine biodiversity. We recommend visiting this island in the north for its proximity to Hanifaru Bay, the world’s largest manta feeding station – it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience to witness the prime feeding time for this extraordinary phenomenon, with massive rays and sharks in abundance.
Kiha Beach: A tropical dream
Kiha Beach, the only bikini beach on Dharavandhoo, might initially give you the impression it could be very touristy. However, even during the peak season, it remains wonderfully serene, with only a handful of visitors.
This beach is a true tropical dream, with fine-grain sand that feels like silk between your toes. Baby whitetip sharks swim in the shallows, and the healthy coral reefs are perfect for snorkeling, teeming with anemone fish and turtles. The palm trees sway gently in the breeze, and little hermit crabs scuttle across the sand, surrounded by ripe coconuts scattered everywhere, completing the dreamy Maldivian vibe. It’s a place where you can truly relax and feel at one with nature, soaking in the tranquility and beauty of this tropical paradise.
Hanifaru Bay: An unforgettable experience
This marine nature reserve on the eastern coast of the Baa Atoll is famed for its turquoise waters and diverse wildlife; it has an immense population of manta rays as well as majestic whale sharks, tropical fish, and much more.
Feel like taking a break from the beach? With any luck, you'll be able to see a manta ray cyclone – a special feeding frenzy in which up to 150 rays will gather and swim in a vortex to capture as much plankton as possible. The best time to visit Hanifaru Bay to catch this natural phenomenon is between the months of May and November, particularly between July and September – that's when the ocean's currents carry the largest amount of prey to the area for the mantas and sharks to feed on.
This is a fragile ecosystem, so it's important to respect the local restrictions that keep everything in balance. Scuba diving in the crystal-clear sea is forbidden, although snorkeling is permitted if you're accompanied by a licensed guide. Always keep your distance from the marine animals and make sure not to take any pictures with flash, as this can cause them distress.
Respecting and advocating for the fragility and beauty of the natural world is a core part of MYMARINI's ethos. You can learn more about our environmental and social initiatives here.
